Mr Nigel Brewster, MB ChB, FRCS(Orth)

Nigel Brewster has been a specialist hip and knee surgeon for 20 years. He specialises in the assessment and management of hip and knee pain. His expertise is in hip and knee replacement surgery and in redoing problem hip and knee replacements.

Training and experience

Nigel trained in Orthopaedics in Edinburgh and spent one year as a Senior Fellow in Adelaide, South Australia, before returning to Edinburgh as a Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon. He was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in Newcastle in 1998 where he developed his expertise in hip and knee replacement and revision surgery.

Nigel has performed over 2,000 hip replacements and 2,000 knee replacements. He has excellent patient satisfaction rates in comparison to national and international levels. The National Joint Registry shows excellent long term results for his joint replacements. As a regional expert he has extensive experience in the causes and management of problem hip and knee replacements and has performed over 500 revision hip replacements and over 200 revision knee replacements.

Alongside his private practice at Nuffield Health Tees Hospital, Nigel now works at the University Hospital of North Tees as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, where he continues to perform hip and knee replacements and revisional surgery.

Nigel is recognised as a leader in both hip and knee replacement and hip and knee revisional surgery in the North East. He teaches on orthopaedic training courses both nationally and internationally.

Nigel represented the North East on NHS England’s Clinical Referencing Group for Specialist Orthopaedics, and on the National Joint Registry for England and Wales.

He has published research papers on techniques and results in revision hip and revision knee replacements.

Nigel is a respected Orthopaedic Surgery Trainer. Many of his trainees are now consultants in the region and further afield. He is asked to assist in the training of trainees in difficulty and retraining of consultants in difficulty.

Having graduated from Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School in London in 1995, Mr Cooke moved to the North East in 1997 to complete his orthopaedic training. He went on to spend a further
six months on a fellowship in Edinburgh Lower Limb Reconstruction Unit working with the leading surgeons in the country and now has extensive experience in lower limb reconstruction including:

Mr A Jafri, BSc (Hons), MB BS, MRCS (Eng), FRCS (Tr &Orth)

Mr Jafri is a specialist consultant in Lower Limb (Hip & Knee) Replacement and Trauma surgery with a specialist interest in revision surgery and knee arthroscopy.

His undergraduate education was at the Universities of Birmingham and Newcastle and he completed both his basic and higher surgical training in the North of England.

Following his qualification as a Consultant he spent one year in Auckland, New Zealand doing the prestigious Revision Arthroplasty and Trauma Fellowship, where he gained further experience in performing complex joint replacements and reconstruction of failing hip and knee replacements.

Mr Jafri maintains an active interest in education, training and research. He is author and contributor to a number of papers that have been published worldwide and also continues to present his research both nationally and internationally.

Research

Mr Jafri is committed to research and has a number of publications and presentations ranging from articles on optimal techniques of femoral stems cementation to novel techniques at reducing the risk of infections in joint replacement surgery. He also acted as a reviewer of scientific articles for the British Medical Journal. He is involved with the North Tees unit in research into metal on metal hips and is North Tees trust lead for the regional Peri-prosthetic Joint Infection Network meetings.

Teaching

Mr Jafri is the undergraduate lead for teaching at the University Hospital of North Tees and Hartlepool. He is also the appointed Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne.

Mr Tony Nargol, FRCS (Tr & Orth), MBBS

Tony Nargol qualified at Newcastle University in 1988 and has now over 15 years of experience as a hip and knee surgeon. He has been been interviewed on the TV in the UK (Channel 4 & ITV), USA (ABC news) and Australia (Four Corners) on several occasions about hips and knees.

HIP SURGERY EXPERIENCE

Since 2002 he has performed over 3000 hip replacements and has become a key opinion leader for hip surgery. His experience has taken him around the world to teach and give expert evidence.

Tony heads up the monitoring and screening of patients with metal on metal hips and his work with his colleagues has changed the type of prosthesis used in the world. He presently uses A* highly rated implants in his patients as well as using oxinium bearings.

Tony has also performed over 600 revision hips that are the replacing of a hip prosthesis when it has worn out.  These patients have come from all over the country for investigation and treatment at Tees Nuffield. Tony works with a skilled team of radiologists and pathologists to work as a team to investigate and treat patents.

KNEE SURGERY EXPERIENCE

Tony was one of the earliest surgeons to use the gender knee replacement from Zimmer. This was one of the first knee implants that had a male and female version. This has been successfully used by Tony for over 12 years. In addition there are some patients who have arthritis of the knee but don’t need a total knee replacement but can have just half a knee replacement (uni-condlyar knee). Tony has experience of several hundred of these over the last 14 years.

Tony also performs arthroscopic surgery for meniscal tears in the knee.

TRAINING BACKGROUND

Tony trained at Newcastle University and completed the Northern rotation before a short fellowship in Toronto. Today he maintains a busy surgical practise but also backed up by extensive research.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

With a team from the Northern retrieval registry (NRR) Tony has produced a lot of ground breaking research, which has seriously altered the type of implants used in the world of hips. This work continues to ensure the best possible implants are used in orthopaedics and for Tony’s patients.

MEDICO-LEGAL WORK

Tony has been asked to give his expertise in trials around the world involving helping patients with defective implants. Countries visited were USA, Australia, Ireland and Spain.

Mr Narendra Ramisetty, MBBS, AFRCS, FRCS Orth

Mr Ramisetty has worked in the UK in Southampton and Birmingham since 2001 as a Junior Doctor followed by specialist Orthopaedic training in the Northern Deanery.

He then went on to complete 3 specialist fellowships in hip and knee surgery with world renowned surgeons in their respective fields:
